How Many Words Is a Given Number of Characters?
As a quick rule, 1,000 characters is about 167 words when spaces are counted. If you use the common shortcut of five characters per word, the answer is 200 words. The calculator above shows both, so you can pick the one that fits your text.
Characters and words are not the same thing, and you cannot turn one into the other with perfect accuracy. A word can be one letter long, like "I", or twenty letters long, like "internationalization". What you can do is use the average word length of your kind of writing and get a close estimate. If you need an exact number, paste your text into the live counter and read the real count.
| Characters | Words at 6 per word | Words at 5 per word |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | 17 | 20 |
| 250 | 42 | 50 |
| 500 | 83 | 100 |
| 1,000 | 167 | 200 |
| 1,500 | 250 | 300 |
| 2,000 | 333 | 400 |
| 3,000 | 500 | 600 |
| 5,000 | 833 | 1,000 |
| 10,000 | 1,667 | 2,000 |
The first column is the safer one when you are working against a limit, because it gives a smaller word count and leaves you some room.
How the Characters to Words Calculator Works
The converter divides your character count by the number of characters in an average word. By default it uses six, which includes the space after each word. You can switch to five for a quick estimate, or type your own value if you know your writing runs shorter or longer. Type words instead and it works backward to give you the characters. Along with the number, you also get the approximate page count and reading time.
The live text counter works differently. It reads what you type or paste and updates as you go, so every number is real and not an estimate. You see words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, unique words, reading time and speaking time. Below that, a set of bars shows how close your text is to the limits of X, SMS, meta titles, meta descriptions, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube. The top keywords box shows your five most used words and how often each one appears, which is handy when you want to check that you have not repeated a word too much.
Everything runs inside your browser. Your text is not uploaded anywhere.
Why Five Characters per Word Is Only a Rough Guess
The average English word has about 4.7 letters. Add the space that follows each word and you land close to 5.7. Many online tools round this down to five, which makes the word count look about 20 percent higher than it really is. For 1,000 characters, that is the gap between 200 words and 167 words.
The type of writing matters too. Chat messages and simple blog posts are full of short words like "the", "and" and "is", so they sit near five characters per word. Business, academic and technical writing uses longer words, and often lands at six or seven. Other languages behave differently again. German, for example, joins words together, so its words run longer than English ones. If your text is unusual, set a custom value in the converter, or skip the estimate and use the live counter.
How to Convert Characters to Words by Hand
Divide the number of characters by the average characters per word. With 2,000 characters and a value of six, you get about 333 words. To go the other way, multiply the words by the same value. A 500 word essay is about 3,000 characters with spaces.
If your character count leaves out spaces, use the letter average instead of the space-included one. At 4.7 characters per word, 1,000 characters without spaces is about 213 words.
Characters With Spaces or Without Spaces
Most limits count spaces. X, SMS, Instagram and meta descriptions all treat a space as one character, and line breaks count too. Some forms, translation quotes and school assignments ask for characters without spaces instead. Always check which one your limit uses, because the two numbers can differ by around 20 percent. The live counter shows both side by side, so you never have to guess.
Character Limits on Popular Platforms and What They Mean in Words
| Where | Character limit | Roughly in words |
|---|---|---|
| X (Twitter) post | 280 | 47 to 56 |
| SMS (one message) | 160 | 27 to 32 |
| Meta title | 60 | 10 to 12 |
| Meta description | 160 | 27 to 32 |
| YouTube title | 100 | 17 to 20 |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 | 367 to 440 |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 | 500 to 600 |
| YouTube description | 5,000 | 833 to 1,000 |
A few details change these numbers in real life. X counts every link as 23 characters, no matter how long the link is, and most emojis count as two. An SMS holds 160 characters only if it uses plain letters. Once you add an emoji or write in a script like Urdu or Arabic, one message drops to 70 characters. Google cuts titles and meta descriptions by pixel width and not by character count, so treat 60 and 160 as a safe guide, not a hard rule.
Reading Time, Speaking Time and Page Count
Most adults read silently at around 200 to 250 words a minute. The tool uses 200, so it errs on the side of giving you a little more time. For speaking, it uses 130 words a minute, which is a calm, clear pace for a talk or a voice-over. A five minute speech is therefore about 650 words, or roughly 3,900 characters.
For pages, a single-spaced page holds about 500 words and a double-spaced page holds about 250. A 1,000 word article fills two pages in the first style and four in the second.
Who Uses a Characters to Words Calculator
Students use it when an assignment or application form gives a limit in one unit and their draft is measured in the other. Writers and bloggers use it to check the size of a piece before they publish. SEO writers use it to keep titles and descriptions inside the safe range. Social media managers use it to fit a message into a post without cutting the important part.
Translators and clients often agree on a price per word or per character, so a quick conversion helps them compare quotes. Developers use it to set sensible input limits and to tell users what a limit means in plain words.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many words is 1,000 characters?
About 167 words when spaces are counted at six characters per word, or 200 words if you use five. If the 1,000 characters leave out spaces, it is closer to 213 words.

About 83 words at six characters per word, or 100 words at five. That is a short paragraph of four or five sentences.
How many words fit in 280 characters?

Yes. The Characters number includes spaces and line breaks, and the Without Spaces number is shown next to it, so you can use whichever one your limit needs.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. The tool runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Your text is kept on your own device only so it is still there after a refresh, and the Clear button removes it.
What is the difference between a character and a word?
A character is a single letter, number, space or symbol. A word is a group of characters separated by spaces. The sentence "Hello world" has two words and eleven characters.
How many characters are on one page?
A single-spaced page holds about 500 words, which is roughly 3,000 characters with spaces. A double-spaced page holds about half of that, around 1,500 characters.
